Forest and Planes -Sunday June 9, 2013

This outing, hosted by Duane Heaton has two parts. Come to one, or the other, and/or both!

The day will start with a trip to Swallow Cliff Woods (south), an 800 acre preserve located in Palos Hills. Originally the toboggan slides in years past; there have been some major restoration projects and it shows. We’ll be visiting the south side where trails have been established. With trees, flowers, ferns, and marshes, there should be lots to keep us busy.

After a hike through the woods, we’ll head to breakfast/lunch to get ready for Part 2 of this outing.

Need practice photographing those fast moving birds, animals, and insects? Well here is your opportunity. The Palos Remote Controlled Flying Club is having is their Annual Air Show and planes of all shapes and sizes will be there. To help make our experience more fun, Duane has received permission for us to go behind the spectator lines, to not only the pit area for up close pictures, but also the pilot stations which are approximately 30 feet from the runway for in flight images. These planes are expensive and also can be dangerous, so we will need to abide by any restrictions they feel are necessary. The number of photographers will also be a consideration.

Click here for a 5-minute video from the 2010 air show.

Bring your lawn chair and camera and enjoy the show while we get some great shots!!

The 57th Sycamore Steam Show & Threshing Bee, August 10, 2013

Are you tired of getting lost in the woods? Is it getting harder and harder to get back up from those macro shots? Do you want to throw your Field Guides out from frustration of trying to identify “something”? Well how about a break from it all at the Steam Engine and Tractor show in Sycamore, IL for some good fun with plenty of photo opportunities.

What will you find?? The yesterdays will be saluted at the 20th annual steam show. You will find a 1940 John Deere B tractor, steam engines, cast iron wheels weighing up to seven tons, brightly painted machines, a parade of engines, cars, tractors, and many other old “things”. Maybe even an “old-timer” or two. Extra sound effects in the form of steam powered buzzers, bells, horns, whistles and sirens rounded out the afternoon concert.

And if that is not enough, there will be a Sawmill in operation using Steam Power, Mule Team and Wagon Rides, grinding wheat, music, petting zoo and Flea Market.

Each day begins with breakfast served until 9am. When the noon whistle blows, it’s time out for lunch with pork chops and chicken BBQ.
